As we all know this is also the name of a Prophet in David's time, the Prophet who YHVH used to direct and reproof David during his life. This makes the connection to the meaning of "giving wisdom" and "to anoint a prophet" because YHVH uses prophets to give wisdom to His people. The office of Prophet is still well and alive today and we read about it in Rom 12:6 where Paul explains the Gifts of the Spirit.
Rom 12:6 Then having gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, if prophecy, according to the proportion of faith;
Nathan means "to anoint, to appoint, to lay onto, to charge, to assign and to send out".
This is a similar meaning to "Messiah" that means "anointed, consecrated person" such as a king or a priest. So the way YHVH transfers His wisdom in human form is through appointing and anointing people with the gift of prophecy whom He uses to guide and direct His people through wisdom.
We always make the assumption that a Prophet foretells the future, but we see that the office of a Prophet is actually to give or bring YHVH's wisdom to the people. This shows us the gift of prophecy and wisdom and teaching goes hand in hand and a Prophet is normally anointed with all three gifts to make his effective. Nathan means "send out" as well and this word has a similar meaning to Apostle that means; 'messenger' and 'he that is sent'. This shows us that Apostles are normally anointed as Prophets that brings wisdom, teaching and reproof to the people within the Body of Messiah. Nathan the Prophet's name was first used in 2 Sa 7:1-11 where YHVH spoke to Nathan to tell David that His people will no longer be travellers and that David's son will build the House of YHVH as David desired to bless YHVH. This is in line with the topic we are discussing regarding the Body of Messiah (House of YHVH) and the offices that exist within the Body to minister to the people.
We can paraphrase Prov 2:6 as follows: "YHVH anoints Prophets within His Body through whom He gives wisdom and from whose mouths comes knowledge and understanding. A Prophet is an extension of YHVH into the physical world and YHVH anointing is upon them and it is as if YHVH is speaking when they speak (only YHVH's true prophets). Deut 18:15-20. People not listening to the Prophet YHVH gave will be cut off and if there is a false prophet among the people, he will be cut off and put to death.
The criteria to recognise a true prophet are:
- What they say must come to pass - Deut 18:22
- A prophet must always speak words in line with YHVH's Torah - Deut 13:1-3.
- Two Prophets must not contradict one another - they must confirm the word that was spoken - Jer 28
- Enoch
- Moses
- Joshua
- Nathan
- Samuel
- Isaiah
- Jeremiah
- Ezekiel
- Daniel
- Yeshua
